The Championship starts tomorrow and all 24 teams will be aiming to finish in the top six for either an automatic promotion place or a ticket to the playoffs. The league is notoriously difficult to escape from and the season is a long, hard and tiring season for everyone involved. Unlike the Premiership, any team in the Championship has the ability to win the league. There are no teams who are a level above the rest when the season begins, every team is equal. The Premiership has the big four who consistently finish in the top four positions but this is not the case with the lower leagues. As a result the betting odds are usually better for the championship teams as any team has the chance of winning the league.
Bristol city were a newly promoted side last season but were leading the table and challenging for the top two positions throughout the campaign. So betting on the Championship is more difficult to predict but the odds are considerably better than the Premiership.
Favourites, Birmingham are 6/1 to win the league, and have a great chance of doing so with names such as McSheffrey, Bent, Phillips and Jerome. They have an awesome attacking line up which should provide them with plenty of goals, helping them finish in the top two.
Second favourites are Iain Dowies QPR, but his future is already in doubt after a reported row with the clubs owners. Dowie has a lot to prove at QPR as he has the funds to buy in new players and has a board hungry for success. They will want a return from their investment in the form of Premiership status next season. Dowie had a fantastic time at Crystal Palace, but since leaving the club, he has struggled to find success at Charlton and Coventry and still has a lot to prove as a manager. QPR are second favourites to win the league at 9/1 with bet direct.
Third favourites to win the league are Reading. Steve Coppell has pledged his future to the club, and his side know how to win the league having done so 3 years ago whilst setting a new league points record of 106. Reading will undoubtedly be one of the strongest teams in the league and Coppell will make sure they finish near the top of the league. Reading are 8/1 to win the league.
Sheffield United have a strong squad and a great manager in Kevin Blackwell. Their opening game is against favourites Birmingham and it will be interesting to see how the blades perform. They have some good players in Horsfield, Armstrong, Ehiogu and Beattie and should be challenging at the top of the table.
Other pre season promotion candidates include, Crystal Palace who finished in the playoffs last year and have experienced manager Neil Warnock, Mick McCarthys Wolves and Derby County who were relegated from the Premiership last season.
Several other teams such as Charlton, Cardiff City, Watford and Bristol City have a chance of winning the league. My tip is Bristol City. Gary Johnsons side could have won the league if they had shown a bit more consistency. His side ended up in the playoff finals and lost against Hull. Johnson will make sure his side are challenging at the top and will need to repeat the form they showed last season. At 20/1 to win the league, are my tip for the title.
