Since the ban on smoking in public areas and the creation of Play Bingo sites, land based bingo halls have had a tough time. Hundreds of halls have been forced to shut after visitor numbers reduced. Gala Bingo have had to shut several branches across the UK as have other brands.
Founder of Gala Bingo, John Kelly, said “This government over a period of many years has really not dealt with this sector well from either a legislative or a fiscal perspective,” Kelly said. “The Labour Government has not been helpful. Basically it has been a hard slog all the way.” Kelly is stepping down from his role after being with the brand for 11 years.
Taxation on Bingo and Leisure companies has also been doubled with Kelly, along with other senior leisure industry bosses, blaming the government. Kelly and others believe the governments have brought in taxes and legislation which has left the land based bingo industry in tatters. The growth of online bingo is also a major factor in the downfall of many bingo halls. Now fan’s of the game are able to play in the comfort of their own home, without having to spend money on fuel or other forms of travel. Players can now take part in their favorite game whilst at home in bed or in the living room.
Internet bingo has seen massive growth in recent years with leading brands being, Gala, Foxy and Crown Bingo
